China Three Gorges Museum (Chongqing Municipal Museum) is located in the west side of Chonqing People’s Square. China Three Gorges Museum covers the total area of 30,000 square meters and was opened in 2005. China Three Gorges Museum is the largest and most modern museum in west China. Due to the need of the cultural and historic relics preservation in Three Gorges Area when Three Gorges Dam project under construction. In 2000, China Three Gorges Museum was formally approved by The State Council and it was the first large museum named with China in the area except Beijing.

Three Gorges Dam project is the world-famous water conservancy project of China. The matched salvage and protection of the Three Gorges Cultural and Historic Relics are also widely noticed by world. China Three Gorges Museum takes the responsibility of reserving and exhibiting the cultural and historic relics discovered in Three Gorges Area. To some extent, China Three Gorges Museum is the themed museum with Chinese Three Gorges Area. China Three Gorges Museum formally called Chongqing Municipal Museum. Currently it is also the local comprehensive museum of history and arts. With the help of Deng Xiaoping, Chongqing Municipal Museum initially was built in 1951 and called Southwest Museum. In 1955, Due to the change or alteration of Chinese Administration Zone, Southwest Museum was under the leadership of Chongqing Municipality and then renamed Chongqing Municipal Museum. Over the past dozens of years, Chongqing Municipal Museum collected tens of thousands of antiques and cultural relics. It has its own features in the collection of museum such as Bronze Wares of Sichuan Province, Artworks of Han Dynasty, The Calligraphy and Painting Masterpieces of famous masters since Song Dynasty, Porcelains for Generations, Bamboo Carving, Wood Carving, Tooth Carving and Bone Carving for Generations, Coins for Generations, The Ethnic Antiques of Southwest Area of China. Besides, a lot of historical and cultural relics and records of modern times are also reserved in museum.
