Chinese Character Museum was officially opened on Nov. 16, 2009 in Anyang of Henan province. Chinese ex-president Jiang Zemin inscribed the name for it. Li Changchun, the standing member of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, participated in this opening ceremony. Professionally exhibiting the development and history of Chinese characters, Chinese Character Museum as one of the world’s oldest continuously used writing systems firstly systemically and specifically records the character civilization of China, which is also considered as the root and core of Chinese Culture. It is significant to set up this themed museum in Anyang who is famous for its oracle bone inscriptions incidentally discovered 110 years ago.

Feng Qiyong, an authoritative Chinese culture master and Former Dean of College of Traditional Study of Renmin University of China, acts as the first curator of Chinese Character Museum. Many a famous cultural learner such as Qiu Xigui, Rao Zongyu, Zhou Youguang, Zhang Han, Li Xueqing and Zhang Hai, also serves as the consultants. “The Chinese characters used by all ethnic groups in China are the ‘cultural genes’ of Chinese civilization and history,” “This is the home of Chinese Character” said Professor Wang Yunzhi of Zhengzhou University.

Chinese Character Musuem located on the north side of east section of Renmin Avenue. It is 8 kilometers away from Yinxu Relics where Chinese original Oracle Bone Inscriptions were discovered. The total area is 34,500 square meters, and the main hall is 32.5 meters high. The museum shows the evolution of Chinese characters since ancient times, showcasing cultural relics, including rubbed stone inscriptions, bronze vessels of the Shang (1600 B.C.- about 1046 B.C.) and Zhou (1066 B.C. – 256 B.C.) dynasties, Chinese seal engraving, ancient coins, writing bamboo and silk, and calligraphy work from different dynasties.  The buildings are also built symbolically themed with the shape and structure of Chinese characters.

Chinese Character Museum is generally comprised of Opening Hall, Basic Display, Themed Display and Special Exhibition. In total there are 8 exhibition halls. Display of Chinese Character Development History is the basic exhibition of Chinese Character Museum, and it shows the origin, development and evolution of Chinese Character. There is a themed museum to show the history of discovery, evacuation and research of Oracle Bone Inscriptions. Additionally, there are also two special exhibitions—Chinese Calligraphic Works of Different Dynasties from The Imperial Palace and Ethnical Character Essence of Relics and Antiques from Nationality Culture Palace Museum .Currently, there are more than 2400 articles of collections. There is an important and highlighted section to show the history of Chinese other characters of nationalities except Han people. So it is indeed a real comprehensive Museum of Chinese Character.

In the visiting process, visitors can also enjoy many relevant activities such as character guessing games and digital Chinese Character. It is said that the second term of the project includes Cang Xie Hall, Science-Popularization Hall, Research Center and Cultural Exchange Center.

Henan Museum as one of themed museums professionally showing the cradle of Chinese ancient civilization provides a great opportunity for viewers to grasp the basic understanding of China’s culture and history. Founded in Kaifeng City in 1927, the Museum was then named Henan Provincial Museum. It moved to Jinshui Road in the provincial city of Zhenzhou in 1961. In 1991, the museum was moved again to a new site — Nongye Road of Zhenzhou, and later, after the consolidation with the Stone-Carving Art Museum in 1997, its name was changed into the new Henan Museum.

The Henan Museum boasts a collection of artifacts discovered throughout the province, including a particularly good collection of Shang Dynasty (17th century BC-11th century BC) relics. The Museum also house Buddhist statues, jade carvings and ceramics.

There are seven permanent exhibitions here. Of particular interest are the Bronze Ware Hall and the Jade Ware Hall. An Audio Tour Guide is available in Chinese, Japanese and English and interactive video shows and computer consultancy services are also available. The Museum also organizes regular exchange programs with foreign and domestic museums. There is also a permanent exhibition here on the February 7th revolt in 1923 — a strike by workers building the railway from Wuhan to Beijing that was brutally suppressed.
