Sichuan Provincial Museum as the largest comprehensive museum of social history and culture as well as arts in southwest area was established in 1941. In 1949 it was renamed Sichuan Renmin Museum and moved to Renmin Park. In 1952, it was finalized as Sichuan Provincial Museum, and in 1984, Deng Xiaoping wrote the name for museum.

The museum collects more than 160,000 articles, there are more than 200 listed into the national treasure list. The collection of museum is strongly featured by its local characteristics. Stone-carved Human face unearthed in Wushan County was the masterpiece of Neolithic Age and has more than 5000 years of history. The Copper Swords of The Warring States Period unearthed in Baxian County of Chongqing has a length of 62 centimeters. The body of the sword and the sword hilt are cast together. The shape of the sword looks like the willow leaf, so it was also called Willow-Leaf Sword. The body of the sword is full of veins, and two edges of the sword have the tiger striation. There are a lot of many other styles of decoration. The veins and the figures are valuable to be the treasured materials of researching the Culture of Sichuan and Southwest China. The Brick-carved figure and stone inscription of Han Dynasty are the important part of collections in Sichuan Provincial Museum. There are a lot of the jade wares, ceramic wares and stone wares. Fuling Bell Set, Taotie Striated Copperware with Whirled Dragon, Striated Copperware of Elephant Head and Animal Face and so son are also the cherished collection in Sichuan Provincial Museum.  The ancient gears, seals, brick-made figure of Han Dynasty, Singing-Narration Figurine and the Sichuan-Style Porcelains of Tang and Song Dynasties are also an important section in Sichuan Provincial Museum.

In Display of Revolutionary Relics of Sichuan Province, visitors can see the arms of red army and diversities of publicity materials in Sichuan-Shaanxi Revolution Base. For meeting the needs of many special visitors, the staff of the museum professionally edited many painting albums such as Sichuan Boat Coffin Funeral, Excavation Report of Wang Jian Tomb as well as The Duplicated Painting of Dunhuang Murals created by Zhang Daqian.
