Xuzhou Museum of Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses of Han Dynasty
Xuzhou Museum of Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses of Han Dynasty

Xuzhou Museum of Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses of Han Dynasty is located at the north foot of Shizishan Mountain (Lion Mountain) in east outskirt of Xuzhou.  In 1985 the museum was established on the basis of the unearthed pits of terra-cotta warriors and horses.

Currently, infantry pit and guard pit have been exploited. The east points of two pits were destroyed in different levels. Currently there are in total 2393 clayed figurine articles. The articles are green-grey. The figurines are clayed horses, clayed figurines of the officials and functionary. All of these figurines belonged to the time of reign of Emperor Han Jingdi and Emperor Han Wudi in Han Dynasty.

Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses of Han Dynasty were the articles buried with the corpse of Liu Wu who was the third king of Chu Kingdom in West Han Dynasty, roughly more than 2150 years ago, just like the terra cotta warriors in Xian for First Emperor’s mausoleum. In Han Dynasty, people thought that the men after dying were just moved to another place for living; hence what they enjoyed before they died they always tried to take to another world for successively enjoying. In many kings’ mausoleums of Xuzhou, many things like storehouse, kitchen, coin-store, ballroom and living rooms are found, even the toilets are also made beautifully.  In this case, many kings or high officials or officers surely hoped they could still lead their large troops after death, and then the terra cotta warriors and horses appeared. Besides, according to the regulation of funeral in Han Dynasty, the terra cotta warriors and horses made for buried with corpse were exclusively used by those who made a great contribution to the country, and it also should be permitted by Emperor.

Currently, in China there are three large-scale sites of terra-cotta warriors and horses: First Emperor’s Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses in Xian, Yangjiawan Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses of Han Dynasty in Xianyang, the third one is located in Xuzhou. Such a large scale site discovered in Xuzhou sufficiently shows the special status of Xuzhou in ancient China. Xuzhou is a long-standing city highlighted by its culture and history of Han Dyansty. Liu Bang, the founder of Han Dynasty was born here, and later Xuzhou inferior to Xian became the second largest center of politics and culture in China. A large number of Han Dyansty Mausoleums are unearthed in Xuzhou shows its glory in history.

Xuzhou museum, built in 1960, is located at the north foot of Yunnong Mountain (Cloud Dragon Mountain) in south district of Xuzhou City. Xuzhou Museum is comprised of Exhibition Section, Temporary Palace of Emperor Qian Long as well as Han-Dynasty Mausoleum of Tushan Mountain. The total area of Xuzhou Museum is 23,000 square meters, and the architectural area is 12,000 square meters. The whole exhibition area is more than 3,000 square meters.

The original site of the museum was the old temporary palace of Emperor Qian Long in 1757. In 1996, the former site was enlarged as the museum and the museum was finished in May 1999. The articles displayed in Temporary Palace and Stele Garden include: the stone carvings of Tang Dynasty, Eight-Tone Stone of Song Dynasty as well as the stone carvings of many famous classical essays like the Former Ode on the Red Cliff and the Latter Ode on the Red Cliff both written by Su Shi, the leading writer of Song Dynasty. The whole garden is strongly featured by traditional pavilions and buildings.

The Book of Shui Jing Zhu written by Li Daoyuan recorded the location of Fan Zeng’s Tomb(Fan Zeng was the strategist of Xiang Yu who was a military leader of Late Qin Dynasty and the counterpart of Liu Bang, born in Xuzhou and the founder of Han Dynasty). The tomb is located in Tushan Mountain, and the diameter is more than 200 meters and the height 18 meters. In No.1 tomb, archeologists found many rare relics like the jade-silver-thread clothes and tiger-style ink-stone. It is said this is the tomb of the wife of Pengcheng King. The No.2 tomb is said to be the tomb of Pengcheng King.

Xuzhou Museum is a comprehensive modern museum and shoulders the responsibility of the local archeological job, cultural relics collection, display, publicity and scientific research. The exhibition centers of Xuzhou Museum are classified into several kinds in line with the dynasties roughly comprised of the Early Time of Xuzhou, Qin and Han Dynasty of Xuzhou as well as Glorified Period of Xuzhou and so on. The articles usually displayed include: the Gem of Ancient Xuzhou, Essence of Terra-Cotta Figurines and Furniture of Qing Dynasty as well as the Calligraphy and Painting of Ming and Qing Dynasties Exhibition. The Key Exhibition District is main place to display the newly-discovered cultural relics in Xuzhou such as the silverwares, copperwares and gold-wares used by King of Pengcheng Kingdom. Besides, white-jade wares and bathroom & toilet of King of Chu Kingdom as well as the gold buttons and belts and the gold sanitary wares of King of Chu Kingdom are also shown in this museum.

The most attractive part of the museum is its jade-made wares like the jade coffin, jade clothes, jade pillow, jade cup, jade goblet, S-style jade ware as well as jade daggers and so on. Xuzhou Museum is the only one to exhibit rare jade wares of Han Dynasty. The most important article in Xuzhou Museum is Jin Lv Yu Yi (Clothes Made of Golden Thread and Jade). The clothes were found in 1995 in tomb of Liu Wu who was the king of Chu Kingdom. The clothes were made of more than 4000 jade pieces. The authorities say this is the best one discovered in China.  By the way, Xuzhou Museum to a most degree is the only counterpart of First Emperor Terra-Cotta Warrior Museum in Xian Shaanxi Province, because Xuzhou Museum not only the municipal museum of Xuzhou to show mainly its glorious history of Han Dynasty but also the central exhibition of the small-sized, medium-sized and life-sized terra-cotta warriors and horses as well as the average figurines of Han Dynasty unearthed in Xuzhou. The terra-cotta works and articles are delicate and life-like, and even more beautiful and attractive than those in Xian. More shocks here!
